Human growth hormone (somatropin) is a single-chain polypeptide of 191 amino acids with two intramolecular disulfide bridges, produced in the anterior pituitary. Recombinant preparations reproduce the native sequence exactly. It signals through a dimerized growth hormone receptor and the JAK2-STAT5 pathway. First isolated in the 1950s and produced recombinantly from 1981. Supplied as a lyophilized powder measured in international units, reconstituted before laboratory use.
